Salt, Body & Energy: An Ancestral Purification Practice for the Nervous System

There is a practice older than any wellness trend, older than the internet, older than the word 'self-care' — and it requires nothing more than a handful of salt, some water, and your presence.

Salt has been used across cultures for millennia as a purifier of space, body, and energy. In West African spiritual traditions, salt holds protective properties. In Celtic practices, it marks the threshold between worlds. In Japanese ritual, it cleanses what has been touched by death or heaviness. In Ayurveda, it draws out what needs releasing.

What happens in your body when you use salt intentionally

This is not about magic. It is about nervous system physiology meeting intentional ritual. When we slow down to prepare a salt bath, to set an intention, to step into warm water — the parasympathetic nervous system activates. The vagus nerve, that long wandering thread connecting brain to gut to heart, begins to regulate.

For BIPOC women in particular — women whose bodies carry the accumulated stress of over-functioning, of code-switching, of systemic overload — these rituals are not luxury. They are maintenance. They are the daily act of returning to yourself.

Salt and the joints: what Reiki practice teaches us

In Reiki practice, we notice where energy stagnates. The joints — wrists, knees, hips, shoulders — are thresholds. They are where movement becomes possible or blocked. When emotional weight accumulates, it often settles there. Tension held for years can manifest as stiffness, aching, resistance.

A salt soak for the hands or feet — warm water, coarse sea salt, a few drops of essential oil — is not just physically soothing. It creates a container for release. The salt absorbs. The warmth opens. The intention anchors.

A simple ritual to try tonight

  • Fill a bowl with warm water and add two generous handfuls of coarse sea salt.

  • If you have them, add 3 drops of lavender or frankincense essential oil.

  • Place your hands or feet in the water. Take three slow breaths.

  • Set an intention out loud or in your mind: 'I release what is not mine to carry.'

  • Stay for 10–15 minutes. Let yourself be still.

  • Dry your hands or feet gently. Pour the water outside if possible, or down the drain with thanks.

That is the practice, simple, ancestral and yours.

The body knows how to release. It just needs permission, and a gentle container to do it in.

Want to go deeper?

A Reiki distance session can support what the salt begins. Energy work — done with presence, lineage, and care — meets you where you are and helps the body remember its own wisdom. If you are ready to experience that, I invite you to book a session or reach out.
